My 4-year-old is always proclaiming that things "make his heart super happy," just like that cartoon character does. He also tries the "stick the bottom lip out so far he's at risk of tripping on it" pout. It still doesn't get him candy or MarioKart. I just can't make life wonderful for him all the time. My 6-year-old is learning this lesson, too, during the current indoor soccer season when he's been "stuck" playing defense the entire time. He hates it more than he hates dolls, ponies and the color pink combined. I'm chuckling to myself each time he gripes, though, because learning to be part of a team is an experience he needed. Down the road, it's going to be far more valuable than if the coach had let him play where he wanted. Yes, there IS more to life than happy. There's resilience, and that's a trait that's going to carry a kid much farther than wall-to-wall glee. I blame this all on Kai-Lan.
